Charles Summer’s take
The Forerunner 965 is the watch I would point a committed marathoner toward when the brief is simple: deep training guidance, proper maps and enough battery for big weekends, without the bulk of a fenix. It is no longer Garmin’s newest flagship, but that maturity is part of the appeal. The feature set is settled, the compromises are clear and sale pricing can turn it into the sharpest premium buy in the range.
Design and display
A 47 mm case, titanium bezel and 1.4-inch AMOLED display give the 965 a premium face without turning it into a wrist weight. It remains comfortable enough for sleep tracking, which matters because training readiness and HRV status depend on consistent overnight data. Five physical buttons remain invaluable when rain, sweat or gloves make touchscreens unreliable.
Running, GPS and maps
Multi-band GPS with SatIQ automatically balances accuracy and battery use. Full-colour onboard maps, turn-by-turn routing, ClimbPro, PacePro and real-time stamina make the 965 credible for city marathons, unfamiliar trails and triathlon courses. Garmin also layers in running dynamics, training status, acute load, load ratio, hill score and endurance score. The strength is not any single number; it is how the ecosystem connects today’s session to recovery and tomorrow’s recommendation.
Battery and everyday use
Garmin quotes up to 23 days in smartwatch mode and 31 hours in GPS-only mode. Always-on display, multi-band positioning and music reduce those figures, but the baseline is generous. The watch also stores music, supports Garmin Pay and handles smart notifications, although it remains a sports watch first.
Independent and owner perspective
Garmin’s launch material positions the 965 above the 265 through mapping, extra performance metrics and more music storage. Independent reviewers have consistently praised its blend of low weight, maps and battery. The important counterpoint in 2026 is the 970: it adds sapphire, a flashlight, speaker/mic and newer running metrics, but loses some battery endurance and costs more.
Verdict
For runners who navigate, race long and enjoy analysing training, the 965 remains a superb tool. Choose the 970 for maximum features and durability; choose the 965 when value, comfort and battery matter more than owning the newest model.
