Garmin Forerunner 265 review: Charles Summer’s take
The Forerunner 265 is the practical performance pick. It gives road runners the data that changes training—readiness, load, recovery, pace strategy and accurate positioning—without charging for maps they may never use. In 2026 it is a previous-generation model, but a good discount makes that a strength rather than a weakness.
Design and everyday comfort
The 265 comes in 46 mm and a smaller 42 mm 265S. The standard model weighs only 47 g and uses a 1.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen backed by five buttons. It is comfortable enough for overnight wear, essential if you want meaningful HRV and training-readiness trends.
GPS and training depth
Multi-band GPS with SatIQ is unusually strong at this tier, especially around tall buildings and tree cover. Training readiness combines sleep, recovery time, HRV, acute load and stress; the morning report brings the important signals together. Wrist-based running power and dynamics, PacePro, race widget, daily suggested workouts and Garmin Coach make it capable from first structured 10K plan through marathon build.
Battery reality
Garmin quotes up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours in GPS-only mode for the standard 265. The real figure depends heavily on always-on display, Pulse Ox, music, GPS sessions and third-party faces. One Reddit owner wrote that they were “loving it overall” and charged roughly every other week with three to four weekly runs, while other threads report four to five days with heavier settings. Those contrasting reports are a useful reminder that advertised maximums are not a universal outcome.
What it misses
There are breadcrumb courses but no full-colour onboard maps. The optical heart-rate sensor can lag during sharp intervals, as it can on most wrist devices; a chest strap remains the serious solution. The newer 570 adds a brighter display, speaker/mic and updated sensor hardware, but the performance gap for ordinary running is smaller than the price gap may suggest.
External review consensus
Consensus score: 9.0/10 from three independent editorial reviews. We converted each publication’s published rating to a 10-point scale and weighted the sources equally. This consensus is separate from the Running Watches Australia score and is not used as aggregate-rating structured data.
| Publication | Published score | Normalised | What the reviewer found |
|---|---|---|---|
| TechRadar | 4.5/5 | 9.0/10 | Praised the bright AMOLED display and deep training tools, while noting the price and lack of full maps. |
| Tom’s Guide | 4.5/5 | 9.0/10 | Highlighted accurate tracking, a lightweight design and useful recovery analysis, with value as the main reservation. |
| Live Science | 4.5/5 | 9.0/10 | Liked its accuracy, higher-end exercise features and OLED screen; criticised the plastic build and missing onboard maps. |

Verdict
If you find the 265 at a meaningful discount, it remains one of Garmin’s best buys. Choose the 570 for newer hardware and multisport refinements; choose the 265 when reliable GPS and training intelligence matter more than novelty.
