Desk review: This Garmin Forerunner 70 review is based on current official Garmin Australia product information and documentation, not hands-on testing. Australian price and specifications were checked on 4 August 2026.
The Forerunner 70 is Garmin’s new entry-level dedicated running smartwatch. At A$399, it combines a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, training readiness, training status, Garmin Coach and up to 13 days of claimed smartwatch battery life in a lightweight 40 g body.
It is built for runners who want more training guidance than a basic activity watch but do not need multi-band GPS, mapping, music storage or Garmin Pay.
Garmin Forerunner 70 price in Australia
Garmin Australia lists the black Forerunner 70 at A$399. The price and ready-to-ship status were verified on 4 August 2026 on the official Garmin Australia product page. Prices and availability can change.
That price puts it below the new Forerunner 170 and above older basic GPS models. Its value depends on whether the AMOLED display and training insights are more important than payments, music or advanced navigation.
Design, display and comfort
Garmin specifies a 42.6 × 42.6 × 11.9 mm case, 40 g weight and a 20 mm quick-release silicone band. The 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen has a 390 × 390 resolution and an optional always-on mode. The lens is chemically strengthened glass, the bezel is fibre-reinforced polymer and water resistance is rated 5 ATM.
Those dimensions indicate a compact everyday running watch, but we have not worn or durability-tested it. Our comfort assessment relies on official size and weight rather than personal experience.
Running and training features
Garmin lists training readiness, training status, daily suggested workouts, Garmin Coach plans, VO2 max, recovery time, race predictor, PacePro guidance and wrist-based running dynamics. These tools can help runners understand recent workload and structure sessions for a target event.
The watch supports more than 80 built-in activities, including running, cycling, pool swimming and strength training. Unlike Garmin’s higher-tier multisport watches, it is not positioned around triathlon profiles, offline maps or multi-band satellite reception.
Garmin lists up to 23 hours in GPS-only GNSS mode and 16 hours using all satellite systems. We have not compared its recorded distance, pace or heart rate with reference devices, so this desk review makes no independent accuracy claim.
Runners building a complete kit can browse RunHQ’s running shoes, running socks and running accessories.
Health and recovery
The Forerunner 70 includes wrist heart rate, Body Battery energy monitoring, sleep score and insights, HRV status, stress tracking, Pulse Ox and women’s health features. Training readiness combines sleep, recovery and load signals to help frame the day’s effort.
These measurements are intended for wellness and training context. Garmin states that relevant health features are not medical devices, and this review does not claim clinical accuracy.
Battery life
Garmin claims up to 13 days in smartwatch mode, five days with the display always on, 28 days in battery-saver mode, 23 hours in GPS-only mode and 16 hours with all satellite systems. Actual runtime varies with display, notifications, sensors and activity use.
The stated GPS figures comfortably cover typical marathon use on paper. Ultra runners should compare event duration and desired tracking mode before relying on the watch.
Smart features
The watch provides phone notifications, Connect IQ compatibility and safety/tracking tools when paired with a compatible phone. It does not include Garmin Pay or onboard music storage; Garmin reserves those conveniences for the Forerunner 170 variants.
